We Settle In

Joe has always told me that things are laid back in Montana. When I saw animal hooves sticking out of the back of every truck, I started to believe him. It truly is the Wild West.

It is always VERY windy here. (The locals say it keeps the developers away!) We can get gusts in the 90 mph range and Joe remembers 164 a few years ago. Joe figures we should send people south after hurricanes to show them how to rebuild because no one’s house here blows away.

One of the doctors took his son to Disneyland when he was about three. He had grown up here and this was his first big trip. He experienced his first plane ride, warm climate, palm trees, and the smell of the ocean. As he stepped off the plane, he put his hands on his hips and said, “Huh. No wind.”

I was blown off the road in my little truck last January. The wind had polished the icy road to glass. I am sure curlers in Canada would have been proud. 2WD, no studs and a canopy were all recipes for disaster.

We went to get a car loan for the now necessary vehicle purchase and learned that we could drive away with a vehicle worth tens of thousands of dollars from total strangers by writing a personal cheque. We also found out that car dealers will actually leave the keys in the gas cap for you in case you want to take the cars out for a test drive after hours. “If you like the car, write us a cheque and keep it. We’ll take care of the paperwork later...”

One woman in town has to park her car at the post office and hitchhike in winter. She gets so snowed in she has to get in and out of her house through a second-storey bathroom window.

Two summers ago, Joe’s friends from Los Angeles were visiting. We took them into Glacier National Park around dinner time. About 15 minutes out of Browning, we came upon two trucks going about 10 mph on the deserted highway. When we got close, we could see that one truck was pushing the other. Joe quips, “And here we have bumper to bumper rush hour traffic in Montana...”
